Good Curling | Centerville, Wis.
“Good curling,” a saying equal parts wishful thinking and salutation, a simple phrase said before the beginning of a weekly ritual, shared among a small community of ice jockeys and experienced breeze shooters.
Curling is a social sport that can be compared to a combination of shuffleboard, chess, and golf. To be a successful curler, players must be able to finesse a 40-pound granite stone over more than 100 feet of ice with the right amount of force and spin for it to stop inside of a 12-foot circle. They must do so with accuracy to both score points and prevent their opponent from scoring, and to compete with the honesty and integrity required to acknowledge their own faults and penalties.
Through the months of November and March, members of the Centerville Curling Club meet every week to participate in one or more of the club’s eight leagues. Whether man or woman, child or senior, the Centerville Curling Club has a league for any person interested in trying their hand at this 16th century Scottish pastime.
