After spending a few of my first years at Shaw Air Force Base while my father was stationed there in the Air Force, my parents, sister and I moved to Sturgeon Bay, back to my old man's former stomping grounds. In the roughly 15 years spent growing up there, I rarely took advantage of the beauty Door County has to offer.
After starting my fourth year at Winona State, I've begun to appreciate what escaped me when I actually lived in Door County. To begin my rediscovery of Wisconsin's sole appendage, I visited the places that were familiar to me, places I have been before, places that are vaguely present in my mind. It is so easy to become discontent with what is around you once it becomes familiar. For me, it took three years spent one state to the west and a bit of maturation to realize that where I grew up wasn't a place with a boring influence. I was simply under the influence of a closed mind.
